The grid pattern helps to accurately cut and fit to your floor. If you take the time to make sure it is squared up with your starting wall it will help you check your progress as you add each row of flooring by giving you a guide on the grid pattern that you can verify that you are not getting out of alignment. When you add another section it is important that you line up the tabs correctly so the grid stays accurate. If you aren't using tape seal for moisture it helps to tape some of the tabs with packing tape to prevent separating as you work your way across the room. It does hump a bit but as you add flooring it flattens right out. I have worked with rolled underlayment but this is much easier.
