Structure and Function:
The Shrinker/Stretcher consists of a cast iron frame that supports a set of jaws rigidly in a controlled manner to apply either a shrinking or stretching motion to sheetmetal. The wide opening of the frame allows more access for shaping larger pieces. The force on the sheetmetal is controlled by means of the long pivot arm (No. 18 – handle). Two sets of jaws are provided and are changed as a pair. The jaws are made of hardened steel. Apply grease to the contact surface of each jaw to reduce friction between the sliding contact surface. Smoothing these surfaces by lapping with 200 – 400 grit sandpaper will reduce the effort needed to shape metal.
Operation and Adjustment:
Use the Shrinker jaws to form an inside radius (curvature towards the front). Use the Stretcher jaws to form an outside radius (curvature away from the front). The extent of shaping is controlled by the proximity of each successive load and the magnitude of the force applied. Ensure that the Shrinker/Stretcher is properly bolted to the workbench or a suitable fixed-stand prior to use.
Note: The Shrinker/Stretcher is designed for a maximum thickness of 16 gauge mild steel (0.060in).
